We use a web browser that’s built into an e-book device to show you the text you’re working on in inkScript, an iOS/Mac application. Despite its clunkiness, the current Kindle browser manages to work quite well when paired with inkScript, with no significant lag. You can also use the touchscreen while editing. We haven’t tested the app with all the e-book devices out there, but basically most e-readers with a browser should work fine with inkScript.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that staring at a computer screen for a long time drains creativity and causes insomnia, distress and other ailments. This is why people use e-books in the first place. Entering a writer’s flow state is much easier when you write in inkScript. At the same time, your inkScript texts won’t languish in drafting limbo thanks to its search function, text previews, folder structure, and dedicated folders for pinned and recent texts.

A single tap on the screen moves the cursor into a place you’ve tapped. A double tap selects a word, a triple tap selects a paragraph, four taps select the whole text. You can also select several words in the text by moving your finger from the first word in a selection to the last one. You can copy or cut selected text, as well as apply italic/bold styling to it. Taken together, this means that inkScript is not only for writing a first draft: you can get a substantial text to a “ready-to-publish” state without looking at your phone or laptop’s screen once.

Yes. That’s the only way you can connect your eInk device to your phone or a laptop where you run the application. Both devices should be connected to the same network. If you don’t have a wifi, you will have to use your phone’s hotspot. When you start editing text, you will see an IP address at the bottom of the screen that you have to open in your e-book’s browser. We would advise against using inkScript when connected to a public wi-fi, otherwise a person who knows your device’s IP address would be able to read the text you’re currently working on.

The purpose of the application is to provide you with a way of writing texts while looking only at an eInk screen. So if you’re running this on a phone, you will need a keyboard connected to it, unless you expect to dictate your texts. However, you can run inkScript on a MacBook too; just click the icon that makes the laptop screen go dark while you edit and use the keyboard you already have. The iOS and Mac application have access the same text vault, so you can switch from one device to another without losing your data or subscription.

There’s a word cap (12000 words) set in the free version of inkScript; after reaching it you go into a read-only mode until you subscribe. The Pro version also has following features: a choice of more than a dozen fonts, a “flow” mode where your editing capabilities are severely restricted, typewriter sounds and a “dark mode” which makes the text appear in the negative.
